How do we come up with our daily specials?
Each day we feature three home cooked specials that are featured separately from our dining room menu. We estimate that we showcase over 350 special entrees each year! That’s a lot of dishes that rival most large-sized restaurants in Chicago. Our specials reflect the neighborhood’s rich culture and diversity. Traditional, funky, American and international cuisines are featured and grouped according to different days. For example, our Greek specials are featured every Thursday, and many customers are excited to try a new, authentic Greek entrée.
Each day, I go in the kitchen to meet my father while he’s making his soups for the day. I sneak up on him and place my forehead next to his, stating: “Let’s put our heads together and come up with the specials for today.”
We both laugh, and that’s how we start our day together as business partners and as father and son. Our inspiration comes from a variety of sources ranging from food magazines; recipe TV shows; and, most importantly, customer feedback. We take pride in listening to our customers’ wants and try our best to transform their individual tastes to a new level for all to enjoy.
Hot Brown = Hot Entree
On April 30th, the Chicago Tribune ran an article about the Kentucky Derby and the Hot Brown sandwich. Horizon Café is one of two restaurants in Chicago to feature this Southern open-faced turkey sandwich. We top our turkey with parmesan cream sauce and garnish it with grilled tomatoes and sliced bacon. Then, we put it in the broiler so that it’s a bubbly, golden brown.
The Hot Brown was created in 1926 at the Brown Hotel in Louisville, KY. How did this great sandwich make its way to a local café in Chicago? About four years ago, a good friend and customer gave me a copy of Savour Magazine. He thought it would give us some inspiration for new specials. It did. The magazine rated the Hot Brown the Best Southern Sandwich. I looked at the recipe and thought that we could easily replicate it. My father created the sandwich, which we then tested on staff and our regular customers to their great satisfaction.
We featured it as a sporadic special, only to then recently make a smaller portion as a daily special, under our “Just Right” Portions Menu. You can get a Hot Brown for $6.99, including your choice of our award-winning soup or garden salad. The Hot Brown is now a local Lakeview tradition, where you can have a decadent sandwich at a smaller portion and an even greater low price!
Why is Horizon Gaining Fame as a Local Tradition?
Each season, Chicago features a great wealth of activities throughout the city. Whether it’s a sporting event, outdoor concert at Wrigley Field, or holiday observance, more people are coming to Horizon Café as they start or finish their day. The Café is conveniently located between two Red Line El stops (Addison and Sheridan). We are also a few blocks from local beaches, and taxis are plentiful. While going to an event, or conducting your errands, or visiting with friends, make Horizon Café your in-between break. Relax and sit back while we take care of you. Remember our view is that it’s all about the customer and the food. For local events at the Café, go to our calendar section.
